Ask most golfers what loft their sand wedge is and they'll know instantly. Ask them what the bounce number is and you'll usually get a blank look. That gap matters more than it should. Loft controls how high the ball flies. Bounce controls whether the leading edge digs into the turf or skips across it, and getting it wrong is a common, invisible cause of chunked and thinned wedge shots that never gets blamed on the club.

What bounce actually is

Bounce is the angle between the leading edge of the wedge and the lowest point of the sole. Set the club down at address and that angle determines how much of the sole makes contact with the ground before the leading edge does. More bounce means more sole hits first, which pushes the club through turf or sand instead of letting the leading edge dig in. Less bounce means the leading edge sits closer to the ground, which lets skilled players get the club under the ball on tight lies but offers far less protection against a fat shot.

Neither is better in the abstract. A high-bounce wedge in soft sand is exactly right and the same wedge on a hardpan fairway will bounce the club into the ball. A low-bounce wedge on that same tight lie is perfect and will dig straight into anything soft. The number needs to match the ground you actually play, not just look impressive on a spec sheet.

Matching bounce to your swing and turf

Two things decide the right number: your angle of attack, and the conditions you play in most.

Attack angle. A steep swing takes a deeper divot and comes into the ball more from above, which wants more bounce to keep the club from stabbing into the turf. A shallow, sweeping swing takes a thin divot or none at all, and wants less bounce so the leading edge can still get under the ball without excess sole fighting the turf on the way through.

Turf and sand conditions. Soft, lush turf and fluffy bunker sand both want more bounce, since the sole needs help resisting the club digging too deep. Firm, tight turf and hardpan or compacted sand want less, since there's less give for the sole to work with and too much bounce will have the club skipping into the ball instead of through it.

A rough but usable starting point: if you regularly take deep divots or play on soft courses, look toward the higher end of the bounce range. If you sweep the turf and play firm, dry conditions, look toward the lower end. Most recreational golfers land in the middle, which is exactly why mid-bounce grinds are the default at every brand covered here.

Grind changes what a bounce number means

Two wedges can share the same bounce number and behave completely differently, because grind, the actual shaping of the sole, changes how much of that bounce you feel at impact. A wide, full sole with a low bounce number still resists digging reasonably well because there's more surface area doing the work. A narrow sole with heel, toe, and trailing-edge relief carves that surface away, so the same bounce number plays lower and effectively lets the leading edge get closer to the turf, especially with the face opened for a flop or finesse shot.
